How does Grab contribute to Malaysia

EconWorks has authored an economic impact assessment to study how Grab’s businesses support the Malaysian economy.

Our study finds that in 2023, Grab has made the following contributions to the Malaysian economy:

  1. Grab services unlocked up to RM9.9 billion in value-added, thus supporting 0.5% of Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
  2. Grab’s ecosystem supported up to 277,237 earning opportunities (or one out of 64 individuals in Malaysia’s labour market), providing income streams for driver-partners, merchant-partners, and workers in their combined supply chains.
  3. The earning opportunities enabled by Grab helped generate RM3.7 billion in additional household incomes.

This methodological note describes the approach used to estimate the economic contribution of Grab’s businesses.  We provide a detailed explanation of the Input-Output modelling approach, the data sources, and computational steps. This note should be read in conjunction with the publication “Driving Value: Grab’s Economic Contribution to Malaysia”
